Brasfield & Gorrie – Central Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Project Overview
In 2023, Geofoam America supplied 3,700 cubic yards of Geofoam for the expansion of the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant in Nashville, Tennessee. Also known as the Central Water Reclamation Facility (CWWTP), this facility is the largest wastewater treatment plant in the state and a critical component of Metro Water Services’ infrastructure.
As part of a major expansion to support growing population demands and regulatory requirements, Brasfield & Gorrie required engineered lightweight fill solutions capable of supporting large-scale structural development while minimizing stress on underlying soils and existing infrastructure.
Geofoam was selected to meet the demanding performance requirements of this high-profile municipal project.
HIGHLIGHTS
Project Highlights
- 3,700 cubic yards supplied
- Municipal wastewater treatment expansion
- Nashville, Tennessee
- Completed 2023
THE CHALLENGE
The Challenge
Expanding a major wastewater treatment facility involves complex structural and geotechnical considerations, including settlement control, load management, protection of buried utilities, and integration with existing operational systems.
Traditional soil fill would have significantly increased vertical and lateral loads on subgrade soils and adjacent structures. For infrastructure of this scale, even incremental settlement can impact long-term facility performance.
THE BENEFITS
Performance Benefits
- Reduced structural and soil loading
- Improved settlement control
- Faster installation compared to compacted fill
- Long-term stability in utility-intensive environments
