Steele & Steele Construction

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Project Overview

In 2024, Geofoam America partnered with Steele & Steele Construction to support the development of a luxury estate property located at 240 Tejas Trail in Basalt, Colorado. Nestled in the scenic Roaring Fork Valley near Aspen, this high-end residential project required precision engineering solutions to meet both structural and aesthetic demands.

The property sits on a rural mountainside, where soil conditions, elevation changes, and retaining wall requirements posed unique construction challenges. To address these complexities, 900 cubic yards of Geofoam were supplied for the landscaping retaining wall systems throughout the estate grounds.

This project demonstrates how Geofoam can provide elegant, high-performance solutions in upscale residential construction where stability, long-term durability, and design flexibility are critical.

HIGHLIGHTS

Project Highlights

  • 900 cubic yards of Geofoam supplied
  • Luxury single-family estate construction
  • Mountain terrain and slope conditions
  • Landscaping retaining wall systems
  • Reduced structural loading
  • Completed in 2024

THE CHALLENGE

The Challenge

Luxury estate construction in mountainous terrain comes with inherent geotechnical considerations:

  • Variable soil conditions
  • Slope stabilization requirements
  • Significant vertical grade changes
  • Retaining wall load limitations
  • The need to protect long-term structural integrity

Traditional fill materials would have introduced substantial weight behind the retaining wall systems, increasing lateral pressure and long-term settlement risk. In high-value residential properties, even minor movement or cracking can become a major concern.

The solution required a lightweight, engineered fill system that could reduce loads while maintaining structural performance.

THE BENEFITS

Performance Benefits for Residential Applications

For high-end residential construction, Geofoam offers distinct advantages:

  • Structural Protection: Minimizes pressure on retaining walls and prevents long-term structural stress.
  • Settlement Reduction: Unlike traditional soil, Geofoam does not consolidate over time, reducing the risk of uneven settlement.
  • Design Flexibility: Allows architects and builders to create dramatic elevation changes and landscape features without excessive structural loading.
  • Installation Efficiency: Lightweight blocks are easy to place and shape, speeding up project timelines.
  • Durability: Resistant to moisture absorption and long-term degradation when properly installed.
